Botanic Horizon writes... ''Cities are mostly found in human friendly – resources rich – like agricultural or coastal environments. Growing cities depend on available space and therefore use the two sun exposed flat and vertical dimensions as intensively as possible. The flat expansion reduces often the most fertile and life supporting ground and its ecosystem, while vertical expansion does not offer the chance for the inhabitants to compensate the natural need of humans for a healing ecological environment. The gap between human demand and available ecological life support expands with the expansion of human settlement.

SmartB writes... 'Buildings are responsible for more than 40% of the global energy use and one third of global greenhouse gas emissions. 75% of the buildings in Germany were erected before 1979, this means they have really bad energy efficiency standards. Thus, the building sector has the largest potential for avoiding significant and cost-effective greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, the facility and energy management is a rudimentary digitised sector. Due to a lack of useful tools for monitoring and...

LightFi writes... 'One simple way for us to achieve global emission reduction is to reduce our energy use. We don't need to change our lifestyle, but rather use technology to help us waste less energy, for example by turning things off when they are not needed.
You're probably thinking this should be easy. Unfortunately, we often forget to do this, especially at work, where it isn’t clear whose responsibility it is, or if we’re even allowed. Neither do current solutions provide much of an incentive. The price and effort in making your home or office smart and more...
At our 2018 PropTech Conference on the 12th April in Berlin, one of our key sessions will focus on building connectivity and the impact this is having on sustainability. Here, 40 Percent Symposium 2018 Host Dr. Birgit Memminger-Rieve from ES EnviroSustain gives her thoughts on the topic, and opens up the debate ahead of the conference session.
From connected buildings to interconnected buildings....Some thoughts on how this could be sustainable
We’ve all heard a lot about IoT, PropTech and how buildings of the future may look. Those who still think that a building is just four walls and a roof may need to adjust their thinking. Really smart buildings connect everything from infrastructure to devices to make your buildings alive, technology use more efficient and alter the way we live and work together. Just to give you a couple of examples: you can have your employees securely move about the workplace with their smart device,...

Vanti writes... "One of the main reasons we find working as Smart building Master Systems Integrators so rewarding is the positive impact our efforts have on the people who live and work in these spaces. We believe that the key to getting the most out of our projects in terms of human benefit lies in understanding exactly how people are going to use the buildings - whether they’re a resident, employee, or visitor.
What is building UX?
Building User Experience (or UX for short) describes how people interact with buildings and the technology contained within them as...
40 Percent Symposium Founder John Pike, talks about the significance of PropTech to the commercial real estate industry, and why the topic is our central focus for our 40 Percent Symposium 2018 on the 12th April in Berlin.
Disruption is real. We only have to look outside of the commercial real estate sector to see the impact disruptive organisations such as Airbnb and Uber have had on their own sectors. These innovators have challenged the status quo and ultimately generated a permanent shift in how their sector does business. Now it’s the turn of the real estate sector to shake off its traditionally conservative shackles, and embrace the changing face of our industry - PropTech.
Since our last conference in Berlin in November 2016, we have seen the emerging force of PropTech disruption in both the commercial and residential real estate sectors. PropTech has the ability to truly disrupt the industry in the way FinTech has impacted...

Real Estate, ‘ripe for disruption’ since 2014. That’s if Ecosia has served me correctly (use Ecosia by the way, they plant a tree for every search made). In three years of being ‘ripe’ and ready, disclosed investment in prop tech, a powerful tool for disruption and innovation, has risen by over 132%, up to $2.7bn (CB Insights). This blog explores one emerging trend...
